BENGALURU: The state department of medical education has decided to write to the Union government for some clarification following the Supreme Court judgment on Wednesday over the state government's notification on mandatory 10-year domicile rule for admission to post-graduate medical seats.
On Wednesday, Supreme Court had said the notification issued by Karnataka mandating 10-year domicile rule for post-graduate government and government quota medical and dental seats is invalid. Following this, the state medical education department officials held a meeting on Thursday. After seeking legal opinion, they decided to write to Union government for clarification.
For 2018-19 academic year, over 11,433 candidates have registered for counselling and even the document verification process of these candidates has been completed. There are over 2,275 medical and 909 dental seats available for allotment.
The direction by the Supreme Court to issue fresh calendar of events is causing trouble as there is not much time for the department. As per the directions by the Medical Council of India, the admissions should be completed by May 18. Considering the nearing deadline and also the assembly elections scheduled on May 12th, the department has decided to write to Union Government seeking extension of deadline for admissions.
Official sources from the medical education department said that the entire counselling process will be rescheduled and the non-Kannadiga students will be allowed to exercise their options and pick government and government quota medical and dental seats as per the Supreme Court direction.
