Army man wins silver in sailing championship

Naib Subedar Vishnu Saravanan of Madras Engineer Group and Centre | Express

BENGALURU: A Naib Subedar from the Madras Engineer Group and Centre, Bengaluru, has won the silver medal in the Laser Europa sailing championship held at Ancona, Italy, in the Laser category. The championship concluded on Tuesday.

Born in Pune, Naib Subedar Vishnu Saravanan comes from a family of sailors, and his father Subedar Saravanan is a wind surfer and coach. Intially, Vishnu trained under his father and in a short period participated in several national and youth category competitions and won medals. He was enrolled into the Boys Sports Company, MEG and Centre, in 2014 based on his talent.

"After joining it, the performance of the individual improved and he participated in the Youth Asia Cup and won silver. He participated in 30 international events with 13 top three finishes. He participated in 10 senior and youth national championships and won gold medals in all the categories. His sister Ramya Saravanan also excels in sailing. She, along with him, is an international sailor. Based on his outstanding performance, he was enrolled in MEG & Centre as Junior Commissioned Officer in 2017," a statement from the centre said.Vishnu will now attend selection trials for Asian Games/Championship scheduled in Chennai from April 16 to 22.
