Baseball roundup: Corbin fans 12 as Diamondbacks sweep Dodgers

Arizona left-hander Patrick Corbin gave up one hit and struck out a career-high 12 in 7 1/3 innings and the Diamondbacks concluded a three-game sweep of the defending National League West champion Los Angeles Dodgers with a 3-0 victory at Chase Field on Wednesday.

Corbin (2-0) retired the first 14 he faced before Matt Kemp blooped a double down the right-field line with two outs in the fifth inning. Archie Bradley replaced Corbin after Kemp walked with one out in the eighth inning, the only other runner off Corbin.

Corbin had two hits, including one of three Arizona doubles, and Paul Goldschmidt, Deven Marrero and Ketel Marte had RBIs when the D-Backs scored in each of the first three innings. They equaled the best start in franchise history at 5-1, done five times.

The Diamondbacks have won a franchise-record nine straight regular-season games against the Dodgers while sweeping the last three regular-season series, although the Dodgers swept them in the 2017 NLDS.

Yankees 7, Rays 2

Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run at Yankee Stadium as New York also received two-run homers from Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge in a win over Tampa Bay.

Stanton rebounded from striking out five times in Tuesday's home opener for the first time in his career. On Tuesday, he heard boos after his fourth strikeout and described his performance as "garbage" afterward despite it occurring in an 11-4 win.

Luis Severino (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 effective innings and won at home for the sixth time in his last nine starts. He became the first Yankee to pitch into the seventh this season.

Angels 3, Indians 2 (13)

Zack Cozart received a hero's welcome at home plate after hitting a full-count pitch for a walk-off home run in the 13th inning to lift Los Angeles past Cleveland.

The Angels' unsung heroes were the eight relievers who combined for 8 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

The extra-inning affair was made possible by two-way player Shohei Ohtani, whose two-run blast in the fifth inning off Indians starter Corey Kluber tied the game at 2-2. The Ohtani homer was Kluber's only blemish, as the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner got through seven innings, allowing the two runs on three hits and two walks.

Braves 7, Nationals 1

Mike Foltynewicz delivered on the mound and at the plate, and Preston Tucker hit his second three-run home run in as many days as Atlanta beat Max Scherzer and took two of three games from Washington in the series finale at SunTrust Park.

Foltynewicz (1-0) surrendered one run on four hits and struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings and had a two-run double in the fourth inning for the Braves.

Scherzer (1-1) gave up five runs (two earned) in five innings. He allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked two.

Astros 3, Orioles 2

Alex Bregman delivered a two-out, run-scoring single in the seventh inning and Houston completed a series sweep of Baltimore at Minute Maid Park.

After struggling to mount a consistent attack against Orioles starter Dylan Bundy, the Astros opted to manufacture runs. Bregman struck against Baltimore right-hander Miguel Castro (0-1) immediately after Derek Fisher moved into scoring position with a steal of second base.

Bregman followed by dumping a slider into left field, providing Houston its first lead of the day en route to beating Baltimore for the third straight time. One inning earlier, the Astros erased a 2-1 deficit against Bundy, with Marwin Gonzalez dropping a bunt that scored Jose Altuve from third.

Twins 7, Pirates 3

Minnesota broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning and ended Pittsburgh's undefeated start at PNC Park.

Miguel Sano had three hits, including a pair of run-scoring singles, and Eduardo Escobar added two hits and two RBIs to help the Twins improve to 3-2 on the season on a night when the game began as snow flurries were still falling.

Pittsburgh, which lost for the first time in 2018 after winning four straight, including a 5-4 victory over the Twins on Monday, squandered an early lead forged by Josh Bell's first-inning, two-out, two-run homer.

Mets 4, Phillies 2

Amed Rosario's two-run triple in the sixth inning snapped a tie and lifted New York over Philadelphia at Citi Field.

The Mets swept the weather-shortened two-game series from the Phillies. A snowstorm forced the postponement of Monday's scheduled series opener. The start of Wednesday's game was delayed more than 90 minutes due to rain.

Robert Gsellman (1-0) earned the win with two perfect innings of relief. Hansel Robles, making his season debut, struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh and A.J. Ramos tossed a 1-2-3 eighth before Jeurys Familia earned his third save with a one-hit ninth.

Cold weather forced the postponement of Detroit's scheduled series finale against Kansas City. The clubs are scheduled to make up the game as part of a day-night doubleheader April 20.
