It is little wonder that Conservatives in London are nervous of the outcome of next month’s borough elections. The nation’s capital seems to have fallen out of love with the party.

In the general election last year, the Conservative vote across the capital fell by 1.7 points, well adrift of the 5.8 point increase in support that the party registered across Britain as a whole. The party was left with just 33.1 per cent of the London-wide vote, more than ten points below the 43.5 per cent it won nationally.

The immediate cause of Londoners disenchantment with the Conservatives  was Brexit. Unlike the rest of England, voters in the capital backed Remain by as much as 60 per cent to 40 per cent....
