Philippines to Close Boracay Island Due to Pollution

One of the most popular vacation destinations in the Philippines will be temporarily closed to tourists.

A spokesperson for President Rodrigo Duterte  said Thursday  the island of Boracay will be shut down for six months in order to conduct some "much needed rehabilitation."  Boracay is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and active nightlife.

But its appeal has been overshadowed lately by inadequate sewage treatment and pollution.

Keeping tourists away from Boracay could have some major economic consequences for the island's residents, most of whom largely depend on tourism to make a living.

The island will be closed starting April 26.
