There will be a lot at stake in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for all, from players to owners and from broadcasters to spectators. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have made a comeback this season after serving a two-year ban, and therefore, it will be a fresh start for them along with the other six teams, all of whom have bought new players at the auctions this year.
Some of the teams will have a problem of plenty while others will have to extract the maximum output from the resources available with them. Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will play this year's IPL without their regular skippers, Steve Smith and David Warner, both of whom have been indicted in a ball-tampering scandal and slapped with one-year bans by Cricket Australia. Overall, it will be an intriguing battle among the teams as always.
That being said, let's look at how teams have performed over the years in the world's richest T20 league:
Mumbai Indians are the only team to win the IPL title on three different occasions – 2013, 2015 and 2017.
Chennai Super Kings have the best win percentage in IPL history, while Mumbai Indians have won the most matches. The Mumbai franchise has been a big success in T20 cricket overall, with 102 wins, which is the highest for any team.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have scored 225-plus runs in the IPL five times, which is also a record. Their total of 263/5 against Pune Warriors India in Bengaluru is still the joint-highest for a team in T20 cricket.
In a case of extremes, Royal Challengers Bangalore are also the only team to have been bowled out for under 50 runs in IPL history.
Kolkata Knight Riders hold the record of winning the most consecutive matches in the tournament. They are also among the three teams to have won six or more matches on the trot on two different occasions; Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians being the other two.
Pune Warriors India are the only team to lose more than eight consecutive matches twice in the IPL.
Mumbai Indians had won 10 consecutive matches at the Wankhede Stadium between 9 April, 2013 and 6 May, 2014, which is the joint-most for any team at a venue in the league. Mumbai Indians share this record with Chennai Super Kings had won 10 consecutive matches at the Chepauk between 22 April, 2013 and 4 May, 2015.
Deccan Chargers had lost eight consecutive matches at Hyderabad (Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium) between 22 April, 2008 and 9 April, 2011 which is a record, but one that would not be proud of.
Royal Challengers Bangalore are the only team to win three matches with a margin of more than 100 runs in the history of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians hold the record of registering the largest victory in terms of balls remaining when they won against Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai in 2008 with 87 balls remaining.
There have been only 10 instances in the league's history when a team has won the match by 10 wickets.
There have been only eight instances in the IPL when a team has won the match by a run. Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have achieved that feat twice.
Kolkata Knight Riders are the only team to win an IPL match by one wicket.
There have been only seven matches that have ended in a tie. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have all played two tied matches.
There have only been two matches with more than 340 runs scored without a single fifty-plus score from the players from either side.
