Robert De Niro to Join ‘Big Little Lies’? What He Said
Actor Robert De Niro could be the next movie star to head to television.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the 74-year-old was asked whether he'd be interested in playing actress Meryl Streep's husband on HBO's Big Little Lies. "Yeah, sure I would," De Niro told ET Wednesday. "Television is not the way it was when I was a young actor. It's totally different. They're doing very good work in television."
Streep, 68, was cast in the critically acclaimed series's second season. She's set to play the mother-in-law to Nicole Kidman's character, Celeste Wright. The Post star joins fellow Big Little Lies newcomers Douglas Smith, Crystal Fox and Mo McRae, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
Reese Witherspoon (Madeline Mackenzie), Shailene Woodley (Jane Chapman), Laura Dern (Renata Klein) and Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie Carlson) are also set to return as Monterey's exclusive mom squad. Alexander Skarsgård, who—spoiler alert—died last season, is rumored to reprise his role as Perry Wright, Celeste's late husband. "I don't even know if I'm really dead or not," Skarsgård told NBC in January. "I feel OK right now but we'll see."
Filming for Season 2 began March 16. But HBO's president of programming Casey Bloys told Vulture in December that "it would be impossible to get on in 2018." David E. Kelley will pen all seven episodes based on a story created by Liane Moriarty, the author of the book the first season of Big Little Lies was based on, according to Deadline. Andrea Arnold replaces Jean-Marc Vallée, who directed Season 1, behind the camera.
"The subversive, darkly comedic drama Big Little Lies will explore the malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting," HBO's official description read, according to E! Online. "Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode...the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom."
Representatives for HBO and De Niro didn't immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.
