‘Y: The Last Man’ Ordered to Pilot at FX With ‘Insecure,’ Beyonce Director

All of the men are dead, but one. That’s the premise of Y: The Last Man, a DC comic book published by the Vertigo imprint in 2002. Written by Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra, the acclaimed dystopian science fiction series ran sixty issues. Rumors of a live-action adaptation have been floating around for more than a decade and it looks like FX is the network finally ready to make the first move. Melina Matsoukas, best known for directing Issa Rae’s HBO series Insecure and music videos such as Beyonce’s “Formation,” is set to direct the pilot.

With humanity doomed to extinction, the graphic novel follows Yorkick Brown, a government agent, a geneticist and his monkey, Ampersand, on a quest across the world to uncover exactly how the extinction happened and why only one man survived.

Simply titled, Y, the creative team for this potential series has off the charts talent. Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner 2049, Logan) and Aida Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage, Turn) will serve as showrunners. Matsoukas (Insecure, Master of None, Beyonce: Formation), Nina Jacobson (Hunger Games, The People v. O.J. Simpson) and Brad Simpson (American Crime Story) will executive produce, and have been working with creator Brian K. Vaughan (Marvel’s Runaways, Saga) to develop the series. FX is a great home for Y, which boasts inventive shows like Atlanta and Legion.

Years ago there were rumors Shia LaBeouf was in consideration for a role in New Line’s film adaptation with David S Goyer and D.J. Caruso attached. Since New Line never moved forward with the project, the rights reverted back to the original creators. It’s been in development at FX in some capacity since 2015.
