Gururaja wins silver in Men's 56kg weightlifting, India's first medal at Commonwealth Games 2018

With a total lift of 249kg, the 25-year-old gets country's first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast.

India's Gururaja on Thursday claimed silver in Men's 56kg weightlifting event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With a total lift of 249kg, the 25-year-old gets country's first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Gold Coast. 

Gururaja, who began weightlifting in 2010, finish second as the gold went to Malaysia's Izahar Ahmad for lifting a total weight of 261 kg while Sri Lanka’s Chaturanga Lakmal claimed bronze. 

The weightlifter, who is a son of a truck driver, had also won a Commonwealth Championships bronze in Australia in 2017.

Meanwhile, India has also defeated Sri Lanka by 3-0 in Badminton mixed-team championship. Later in the day, several Indians are expected to participate across various disciplines in the Australian coastal city.
