Students from Melbourne's University have been given the chance to work on one of Australia's biggest real estate applications. Deakin University's School of Information Technology and Gavl have partnered to give these students this option.
In a year since its launch, Gavl has been used by 200 Australian real estate agencies and broadcasted over 5000 auctions to reach 3.5 million views. The app has been downloaded in 50 countries. Founded by AFL player-turned-businessman Joel Smith with Leith Donaldson and Michael Artup, it recently secured $1.8 million in funding from Harris Capital, the investment office of Flight Centre founder Geoff Harris, taking its funding total to $5.1 million in the last year.
Eight students undertaking the Industry Capstone Program – in which final year Bachelor of IT and Bachelor of Computer Science students develop solutions to real-world problems for industry brands – have been selected to work on app development for Gavl.
Gavl has a patent-pending platform that enables it to broadcast auctions with a one-second latency. The technology – developed by Gavl – took 12 months to build, and has a shorter latency than Facebook Live[1].
The Capstone program runs from March to October, with teams being chosen to have a mixed skill set from user experience design, user interface, app development, web development, data analytics, games, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, cyber security and robotics knowledge majors.
For Gavl, the students will be working on projects such as camera robotics, auction bidding gamification, property price estimations and voice to text translation.
Leith Donaldson, CTO of Gavl, says: “We’re committed to remaining at the forefront of the tech industry so we're on the hunt for the brightest talent to develop our world-leading technology. In my view, recent graduates are closest to the latest technology trends and are hungry to make a difference. The next era of tech innovations will come from the freshest industry experts, so in working with Deakin’s School of IT we're providing real industry experience and creating career pathways for the next generation of tech whiz kids. We're hopeful that a few of the program’s high achievers and brightest minds will consider an ongoing career with Gavl.”
Students commenced development in March, with prototypes expected throughout 2018.
Students will be assigned an academic supervisor who will mentor, assess and manage the teams. Gavl will also commit time to provide feedback and review work every fortnight.
Dr. Gang Li, Associate Professor in Deakin University’s School of Information Technology, says: “Working with Gavl will give our students unique insights and commercial experience in the innovative applications of big data, robotics, mobile games, artificial intelligence and live streaming technology.”
