Cong. admits to move on impeachment

The Congress on Thursday admitted for the first time that it was in discussion with other Opposition parties to bring an impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

With only a day to go before the Budget session of Parliament ends, the Congress was asked if it planned to bring the motion on the last day of the session. “I would not be able to answer at this press conference but our senior leaders who are in touch with other Opposition parties on this issue would answer your queries when the need arises,” said party’s Rajya Sabha MP Raj Babbar while addressing reporters on behalf of the party.

Though no other senior leader spoke on record, sources claim several meetings took place on Thursday. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad is understood to have reached out to Trinamool Congress’s Derek O Brien and the DMK.

Senior lawyer MPs of the Congress are also believed to have discussed the issue threadbare as there are two views within the party.

“The Congress is trying to involve as many parties as possible. If you have the requisite numbers you can submit the impeachment motion at any point. Parliament doesn’t have to be in session,” said a senior Opposition MP who has signed the petition.

So far, the Congress has been ambivalent on the issue even as other Opposition parties have always projected as the party taking the lead in the impeachment move.
