Clinton Takes Sly Dig At Trump Without Even Mentioning His Name

Hillary Clinton has hit out at the U.S. under Donald Trump, saying the country is facing a war on “truth, facts and reason” and taking a dig at the president without even mentioning his name.

Speaking at the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening, Clinton observed, “We're seeing a retreat from the commitment to embrace women’s advancement as an objective of U.S. foreign policy” at the event honoring female leaders.

"I don’t think it's a coincidence that at the same time, we are witnessing an all-out attack on core values of democracy: free speech and the rule of law," Clinton said at the event honoring female leaders, according to Fox News.

"A war on truth, facts and reason. So women’s voices have always been vital, but never more so than right now,” she said, failing to mention the president by name but leaving people in little doubt as to who her jibe was aimed at.

Speaking at the event just a day after appearing at a women-only work space in New York, Clinton reiterated a point made in her post-election book What Happened—that gender remains an issue in politics. Indeed, she has previously called Trump’s campaign sexist and appeared to be continuing the theme.

“Any of you who’ve read my book about 'what happened' know that I think misogyny and sexism was part of that campaign—it was one of the contributing factors,” Clinton said in February at a panel at Georgetown University. “Some of it was old-fashioned sexism and the refusal to accept the equality of women, and certainly the equality of women’s leadership.”

The former presidential candidate has also been vocal about the state of the nation since her election defeat, saying Tuesday that it’s hard to see Trump running the country. She warned that she doesn’t believe “we’ve seen the bottom yet” and that things in the country could get worse.
