
Committee to supervise quarrying activities

TIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Assembly Committee has recommended for the constitution of a committee headed by the district collector to supervise quarrying activities at Mookkunnimala. The committee will take steps for an environmental impact study, protection of quarry workers, local residents and exploring the possibility to provide more raw materials to the construction sector. Department heads concerned, people’s representatives, members of the Mookkunnimala Samrakshana Samithi and local residents will be members of the committee.
Police check-posts will be set up on nearby roads to examine the volume of granite and other products transported from the quarry and crusher units. Mining and Geology Department should set up a system to ensure that quarrying rules are followed to put an end to the frequent accidents reported from the area.
A unit of the Fire and Rescue Services will be started at Mookkunnimala.Fencing will be made around abandoned quarry ponds.
