Cauvery issue: 300 protesters arrested in Coimbatore

CHENNAI: Police arrested more than 300 members of opposition parties who staged demonstrations and road rokos here to protest against the Centre’s failure to constitute a Cauvery management board, as directed by the Supreme Court.

Around 100 members of the DMK, led by Singanallur MLA N Karthik, picketed the BSNL office in the area. It affected the functioning of the office. Police removed the protesters and arrested 43 of them.


DMK youth wing members led by its coordinator Kottai Abbas staged a novel protest near Sivalaya Junction in Selvapuram. They wore human bones around their necks and held rats in their mouths. Police arrested 17 of them.


DMK women's wing secretary Meena Logu led a protest near the BSNL office at Ganapathy while party’s ward 59 secretary, P T Murugaesan, led a road roko on the Avinashi Road. Police arrested all the protesters.


Led by former MLA Arumugam, CPI cadre attempted to stage a rail roko. As a preventive measure, police arrested 163 of them.
