City workers in historic downtown Florence, Alabama, were tasked with cleaning up graffiti Tuesday after someone painted a mural of President Trump shooting schoolchildren.

Business owners on Tennessee Street were shocked Monday morning to discover the graffiti in an empty lot, which is privately owned. The elaborate design showed a caricature of the president pointing a handgun at a group of blood-spattered schoolchildren and the hashtag #NeverAgain, an anti-gun campaign spearheaded by the shooting survivors-turned-student activists in Parkland, Florida.

“It’s not something that we want to have to see every day,” Sarah Shirey, who co-owns Turbo Coffee across the street from the graffiti, told WHNT. “My husband and I were looking at it, trying to figure it out, and then we realized all of the red coming out of the bodies was blood; and then I was assuming it was a school shooting.

“They are obviously trying to send a message about what they believe, and I guess people have that freedom here, but that is a private piece of property and so they can’t really do it there. Which we really don’t appreciate it there,” she added.

Florence Mayor Steve Holt called the design disgusting and said it had no place in the city, WAAY reported.

Many people stopped to take pictures of the mural Monday, the station reported.

AL.com reported Tuesday that the graffiti had been cleaned up by city workers.

City authorities have yet to identify the vandal, who could face a criminal mischief charge, AL.com reported.
