PUNE: An
on-duty police constable was roughed up and his shirt was torn by three bikers on Tuesday night. They were performing stunts and rashly driving the motorbikes in
Wakad and he told them to slow down.
Constable S P Jadhav from
Wakad police station noticed the three bikers accelerating and applying sudden brakes on the road. When he told them to go slow, the trio sped towards him and applied sudden brakes right in front of him. When Jadhav sought to know their names and addresses, the trio roughed him up and tore his shirt before speeding away.
The constable lodged a police complaint against the unidentified bikers for offences punishable under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Jadhav said he was patrolling in
Tathawade around 8pm on Tuesday when he spotted the three motorcyclists speeding towards Tathawade from Wakad. The bikers were also shouting at the top of their voices. They were racing and attempting some stunts on their bikes.
“The three motorcycles had modified silencers which sounded like bullets firing at intervals when they rode them. It disturbed other road users. The suspects were also neglecting the safety of other road users, ” he added.
Sub-inspector Sangeeta Ghode, who is investigating the case, told TOI, “The three motorcyclists halted near him and demanded to know what was their mistake. Jadhav told them to maintain peace and tranquillity and to ride safely. When he took out his pen and paper to take down their names, the men grew enraged. They grabbed him by his collar and then grabbed his arms and slapped him. One of them tore his shirt. Before Jadhav could retaliate, the suspects sat on their motorcycles and sped away.”
When Jadhav returned to his motorcycle, the owner of a pan stall nearby told him the three boys are local villagers and if any action was taken against them, they would return “to break Jadhav’s bones”, the complaint said.
TIMESVIEW
Strict action must be taken against the youths involved in the bike stunts and intimidation of a police constable who tried to stop them. Citizens have been complaining about this menace for long with little action to curb unruly bikers. Besides risking their own lives, they also pose a danger to other road users. The silencers of their bikes are tampered with and disturb the quiet in residential areas at night. Workshops and garages that illegally modify silencers should be warned of work permit cancellation. Confiscating the bikes of these stuntmen is another option the police should explore apart from cancelling their licences.
