City suffer Arrows defeat at home

2018-04-04 22:41

Cape Town - Lerato Lamola scored the only goal of the game as Golden Arrows edged Cape Town City 1-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.

The first real effort after a slow and measured opening by both sides saw Lamola fire a seventh minute free-kick just over City stopper's Sage Stephens' crossbar.

Maximilian Mbaeva made a good save at the other end to deny Ayanda Patosi after a good break forward from Lyle Lakay.

Arrows were passing the ball around although there was no one on the end of a teasing Zolani Nkombelo cross on 19 minutes, while Mbaeva then stood firm from a driven effort from Lakay from outside the box that he did well to hold onto moments before the half-time break.

Arrows had been threatening in the first 45 minutes, and it took them just five minutes into the second half to take the lead, through Lamola. Musa Bilankulu fed Danny Venter who raced into the box and found Lamola to slot home on the run.

City upped the tempo in search of an equaliser but it was Arrows looking the more likely scores of a second.

Stephens made a super stop just past the hour mark from a Venter free-kick that was heading into the top corner of the net.

Try as they might, City were unable to break down a resolute Arrows defence.

Lamola may well have added to the scoreline for the away side, with two good chances that he was unable to take, as Clinton Larsen's side emerged as deserved winner's over Benni McCarthy’s charges.
