VIJAYAWADA: Standing crops in an area of 21,693 acres across the State were damaged due to the recent untimely rain. Crop loss is put at Rs 56 crore.

Speaking to media persons at the Interim Government Complex (IGC) in Velagapudi on Tuesday, Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said hailstorm lashed several parts of the State from March 16 to April 2.

He said teams formed by Collectors of various districts are still continuing the enumeration of crop loss. Once the enumeration work is completed, the government will provide input subsidy to the farmers as per the norms laid down for the purpose, he said.

The TDP government distributed Rs 2,075 crore to farmers towards input subsidy in the last three-and-a-half years.

Marketing Minister C Adinarayana Reddy, who was also present at the press conference, said that the government would extend Rs 200 more on purchase of quintal of maize and sorghum. As the prices of both maize and sorghum decreased in the market, the government will aid the farmers through market intervention scheme, he said and added that every farmer would get the benefit.
