Cape Town – Work resumed at Northam Platinum’s Booysendal North mine on Wednesday, after workers downed tools last week.

This is according to a notice issued to shareholders by Northam Platinum [JSE: NHM] and Murray & Roberts Cementation on Wednesday.

A total of 750 workers, contracted by Murray & Roberts for a project at the Mpumalanga mine, embarked on a strike on Monday, March 26.

The strike action came after Northam approached workers to become full-time employees as part of a strategy of Booysendal becoming an owner-operating mine. There were disagreements over contract packages the workers had with Murray and Roberts, spokesperson Marion Brower explained to Fin24.

However, Murray and Roberts had engaged with the union representing the workers the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). An agreement was reached and workers returned on the morning shift on Wednesday.

Brower was not privy to the discussions of the details related to the packages. AMCU could not be reached for comment on the agreement.

Booysendal will continue its transition to owner-operator status on May 1 2018.

By 15:59 Northam's share price traded 4.22% down to R33.81.
