100 arrested after violent protests in Hry during Bharat Bandh

Following violent protests in various parts of Haryana during a nationwide bandh called by dalit outfits on Monday, the State police has registered 47 cases and arrested 100 persons.

Haryana Director General of Police, B S Sandhu on Tuesday said that taking strict against those involved in violent incidents, 47 cases were registered and 100 persons were arrested in the State. He said that during ‘Bharat Bandh’ protests, 84 police officers, officials and eight persons from general public were injured and 24 government and 60 private vehicles suffered minor damages in Haryana.

Stones were pelted on two trains besides Shatabadi Express and six complaints were received regarding breaking of glasses and shutters of shops, he added.

In view of the Bharat Bandh announced by the Scheduled Caste community in the wake of the Supreme Court decision to make changes in the SC/ST Act, the Haryana Police had deployed additional police force all over the state. Police officers were instructed to prevent any untoward incident and keep the law-and-order situation under control, said Sandhu.

Notably, despite the deployment of police forces to thwart any untoward incident during the agitation, the protestors had turned violent destroying and damaging government and private property, blocked trains and forcibly shut down shops in various parts of Haryana.

Incidents of violence were reported from Faridabad, Bhiwani, Karnal, Hisar, Yamunanagar, Kaithal, Jind, Fatehabad among other places. At several places, mob had clashed with police personnel who had to resort to firing in the air, lathicharge and used tear-gas shells to disperse the protestors.

The DGP, however, claimed that due to proper arrangements made and prompt action taken by the police, the situation remained largely peaceful in the State.
