MALTA – People willing to shave their head for a good cause are encouraged to visit Remington’s Gastropub on Sunday for the pub’s first Shave for the Brave fundraiser to help raise money for childhood cancer.

The event, organized by owners Kristen and Curt Catencamp, is one of the many head-shaving events that support the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that allocates 72 percent of donated funds to cancer research.

Although employees of Mira Salon and Spa in DeKalb will be on-site at 102 S. Third St. in Malta with clippers in hand, those wishing to keep their hair are still welcome to attend the event from 2 to 9 p.m.

A portion of Adams Street will be blocked off for the fundraiser, which will include a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, beer garden, bounce house for children and a performance from Sycamore cover band Back Country Roads from 3 to 5 p.m.

The event will also honor Jake Dobie, a first-grader at St. Mary Catholic School in DeKalb, who was diagnosed with leukemia last year.

Jeff Dobie, owner of Fatty’s Pub and Grill and Jake’s father, said when the Catencamps heard about Jake’s condition, it was a no-brainer for him to be honored.

“I’m appreciative of everything they’ve done,” Dobie said.

Dobie said the Fatty’s shuttle bus will run throughout the event to make sure people get home safely.

As of Tuesday, the event has raised more than $6,500 of its $15,000 goal. Kristen and Curt both said they will shave their heads if the goal is met.

Donations for the event can be made at the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website. Donors are able to set up their own teams on the St. Baldrick website and set their own fundraising goals for shaving their heads.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Since 2005, approximately $232 million has been raised for cancer research, according to the website.
