Train coaches to get a facelift

The Ministry of Railways and the Railway Board in a circular to all Principal Chief Mechanical Engineers has asked them to improve the condition of 140 rakes (composition of coaches) used to run 66 pairs of trains under the project named Utkrisht.

An allotment of ₹ 60 lakh a rake has been made for the project. Sources said the Railway Board has identified the 66 pairs of trains.

Zonal and divisional heads have been asked to submit changes, if any, to the trains identified.

Works should be completed by April 30.

Works involve improving cleanliness in coaches, cleaning of toilets once in two hours, placing garbage bags in coaches and toilets, and regular removal of garbage.

Floors of coaches, and cushions should be repaired. Uniformity in colour should be maintained while repairing cushions.

Good quality curtains should be used in coaches, and they should be cleaned periodically.

Broken roof and wall panels should be replaced and painted white. Posters can be used to improve the interior aesthetics. LEDs should be used in coaches and toilets. Toilet occupancy indicator too should be in place in all air-conditioned coaches.

Doors, wash basins, and taps too should be repaired. Pantry should have gas based cooking, and all gadgets used should be in good working condition. Exteriors of coaches too should be well maintained.
