IndiGo support staff at Varanasi airport go on strike over wages hike

Nearly 56 support staff of IndiGo went on a strike on Wednesday morning at Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport demanding a hike in wages.

IndiGo said that the employees belonged to a ground handling agency and that it was working with it to resolve the issue. The airport director said there were no flight delays faced due to the strike.

“They went on a strike without informing me. I have spoken to the IndiGo station manager as well as the representatives of the workers. They had concerns about minimum wages. The matter has been resolved,” airport director Anil Kumar Rai told The Hindu over telephone.

He added that while in the morning there were some hiccups, no flights were delayed because of the strike.

“We are actively looking into a solution for the concerns raised by the staff of our ground handling agency, G.V. India Services, at Varanasi Airport. IndiGo follows a regular payment cycle for its ground handling agents and our payments have remained compliant and up to date throughout the duration of our operations at Varanasi,” IndiGo said in a statement, adding that it will work with the agency to resolve the matter.
