GIRARD — The Girard baseball team got the game-deciding run in the top of the seventh to outlast Riverton 8-7 on Monday. Trojans softball had little trouble with the Rams in their doubleheader, dispatching Riverton 15-1 and 11-4.
Baseball grinds out win
Taylor Bruning scored the winning run in the seventh for the Trojans. After gaining first base on a walk, Bruning advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Troike. After advancing to third base on a sacrifice fly to center field by Ty Norris, Bruning made it home after Ethan Jahay’s ground ball led to a error in the infield.
Wade Boatman led the Trojans, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Troike went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Connor Dillon and Ethan Jahay chipped in two hits apiece.
Girard begin scoring in the third frame, with Norris bringing home Troike on a infield single. Norris scored on the next at-bat, a Jahay RBI-double. Connor Dillon’s single to center field allowed Mitch Murphy to score, putting Girard up 3-0 after three.
The Trojans extended the lead to 4-0 thank to a Boatman RBI in the fourth. Girard continued to add to their lead, with a Boatman line drive RBI in the fifth putting them up 7-0.
Riverton would bounce back in the sixth, scoring seven runs to knot the score up before Girard took the win in the final frame.
Softball sweeps Rams
After scoring three runs in the opening frame, Girard softball scored four in the second inning to go up 7-0.
The Trojans largest inning was the third, where they poured in six runs on the Rams, allowing them to cruise for the rest of the way.
Girard softball found themselves down 4-0 after three innings in the second game, but after a one run fourth the Trojans hammered Riverton with a seven-run fifth. They added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to clinch the 11-4 victory.
