President Donald Trump is not currently a criminal target of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, the Washington Post reported Tuesday night. The Post said that Mueller told Trump's attorneys last month that he is continuing to investigate the president but needs to interview Trump in order to complete his probe into Russian election meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. Mueller also told the lawyers he is compiling another report on Trump's potential obstruction of justice while in office, the Post reported. Mueller's comments set off a split among Trump's attorneys, the Post said, with some confident it meant he would not face criminal charges and others worried he was still in legal jeopardy. That split reportedly caused lead attorney John Dowd to quit because Trump was not heeding his advice.
