CHENNAI : Before we look into this from a behavioural perspective, consult a vet and seek medical attention, if required. Your dog’s refusal to step out of the house is arising out of fear. A fear that has probably been induced. Look back at the incident and think about what your reaction was when he was hit by the car. A bad experience, reinforced with a severe negative reaction instills a sense of fear in the dog. Subconsciously, we instill our fears in the dog’s mind and don’t realise that our dogs are mirroring our emotions.

It is important to be aware of that past, but equally important to help your dog succeed in the present. In cases like yours, the dog is so consumed and overwhelmed with fear that you might need to come up with innovative ways to help him overcome the fear and embrace walking again. Try encouraging him to follow you outside by giving him a treat every few steps. If even your best treats don’t work out, use his favourite toys and encourage him to play. Use exciting emotion and positive words all the time and do not be frustrated by setbacks. Always end on a good note and work with the end goal in mind.

Take baby steps — go to a point just outside the door and encourage him with his most favourite treats — give him the treat when he steps out and comes to you. He will be reluctant at the start but he will slowly associate the positivity of the rewards and move forward. If you have another dog or a friend’s whose company your dog enjoys, try to walk them together. Walking with a friend might be a good incentive and the other dog’s confidence will also help your dog to look beyond his fears. The key is to remain calm and patient throughout the transition. Consult a professional behaviourist can assist you with the rehabilitation. (If you have any questions related to your pets, send them to petsfaq@gmail.com)
