A 56-year-old man suffering from an incurable condition of heart got a new lease of life when doctors transplanted a heart from a 30-year-old person who was declared brain dead after meeting a fatal accident. Interestingly, the heart is air-lifted from Jaipur to Delhi under supervision of a team of expert doctors.
A team of doctors at BLK Super Specialty Hospital operated free of cost as the recipient who is a government employee belongs to the lower income group category. He was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy a stage where he could not perform his routine day to day activities without getting breathless and had multiple episodes of sudden loss of consciousness.
BLK informed that as soon as National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) informed about the donor and availability of a heart, a team of doctors led by Dr Ajay Kaul Chairman and HOD CTVS, BLK Super Speciality Hospital immediately left for Jaipur by an by an early morning flight on April 2. Dr. Sushant Srivastava, Senior Consultant and Director, CTVS, Dr. Dheeraj Gandotra, Consultant, Cardiology, Dr.Jasbir Singh Khanuja, Director and HOD, Anaesthesia, harvested the heart Monday night at Jaipur. The harvested heart was flown down to Delhi by a 10:05pm flight that landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport at terminal 3 at 10:47pm before time as a special case.
A green corridor was created from IGI Airport to BLK Super Speciality Hospital covering a distance of 15 kilometres over 18minutes at night.The heart was then transplanted in the wee hours of night by Dr. Ajay Kaul along-with his team.
“The recipient was suffering from heart complications from past few years. The pacemaker was implanted at BLK Super Speciality in July 2017. The patient has had bouts of blackouts and fainting episodes post 4-5 months of the pacemaker. For a better quality of life, Heart Transplant was an ideal option,” said Dr Ajay Kaul, Chairman and HOD, CTVS, BLK Super Speciality Hospital.
