VARANASI: The ground staff of IndiGo airlines at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi, went on strike on Wednesday demanding hike in salary and other facilities. They also staged a dharna outside the airport in support of their demands.

Although the airport authorities had to face problems in dealing with passengers, they claimed that no flights were affected due to the strike. The time table of all flights was maintained, claimed the airport director AK Rai. He said that the parley is on between the striking staff and management to end the deadlock.

The director said that problems were caused due to sudden strike of airline's ground staff without giving prior notice to the Airports Authority of India. "But, we managed to handle the situation by engaging our manpower and airline's commercial staff," said the director.

The IndiGo airline operates flights for Hyderabad, Patna, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, and Mumbai. A total of 54 ground staff including porters, loaders and drivers went on strike in support of their demands including salary enhancement, stop of break shift, opening of PF account, ESI cards to staff, timely payment of salary, and over time after 8-hour regular work.
