Australia's AGL says approached by Alinta to buy coal-fired Liddell plant Sydney: AGL Energy, Australia's biggest power producer, said on Wednesday that Alinta Energy had expressed an interest in acquiring its coal-fired Liddell Power Station in New South Wales state.

"No formal offer has been received. Should a formal offer for Liddell be received, it would be given consideration in order to meet our obligations to customers and shareholders," AGL said in an emailed statement.

AGL had planned closing the power plant in 2022. However Alinta, owned by Hong Kong's Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, sees "a commercial opportunity" in extending its life, Managing Director Jeff Dimery told The Australian newspaper.
