Miranda House retains top position in NIRF ranking

AIIMS takes lead in the newly introduced medical category in the ranking

Delhi University’s Miranda House continued as the highest-ranked college in the country for the second year in a row while the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) topped the newly introduced medical category in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2018 released on Tuesday.

Other colleges from the city that fared well are St. Stephen’s College in second place, Hindu College in fourth place, Shri Ram College of Commerce in seventh and Lady Sri Ram College (LSR) in eighth place.

Lady Irwin College, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College and Gargi College also found themselves in the top 15 colleges in the country.

Last year, SRCC was ranked third, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College had been ranked fifth, above LSR, which was at seventh best while Dayal Singh College and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya had been ranked eight and nine respectively.

Dayal Singh College and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya fell to rank 25 and 13 this year.

Reacting to being ranked the top college in the country for the second year in a row, Miranda House Principal Pratibha Jolly said, “Even though personally I do not believe in ranking systems, this entire process has been interesting. It is a reaffirmation of the fact that we are doing something good.”

She added that the ecosystem of Miranda House has been great with almost 70% students being outstation students.

“They represent the demography of the nation with students from various backgrounds coming together in search of good education. The ranking will definitely give them a better sense of pride and help them aspire further by being a part of this institution. Every institution owes this to its students,” said Ms. Jolly.

JNU secures place

In the university rankings, three universities from the city found themselves in the top 15. Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) secured second, seventh and 12th rank respectively. Delhi University improved its ranking by one position.

Vice-Chancellor of JMI Talat Ahmad expressed happiness over the university going up by one notch in the ‘overall’ category.

“The ranking is an encouraging sign that the university is improving in most parameters but there is scope for improvement in certain others,” Prof. Ahmad said.

V-C applauds students

Prof. Ahmad also expressed happiness over the law and the architecture faculties featuring among the top 10 institutions in their respective category. JNU Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar congratulated students, staff and faculty members and asked them to continue on their pursuit of excellence.
