Bharat Bandh

An uneasy calm settled in violence-hit Gwalior, Morena and Bhind districts of Madhya Pradesh where protests in yesterday’s dalit agitation during the Bharat Bandh claimed seven lives.
Three people were killed in Gwalior and four in Bhind. The death of one person in Morena during the violence was the result of old enmity and was not connected to the agitation.
“Curfew remained in force in Gwalior’s Thatipur, Murar and Gole Ka Mandir police station limits, Morena and Bhind towns, and Bhind district’s Mehgaon. Curfew was lifted from Gwalior’s Maharajpura Police Station limits. The situation is under control,” Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) Makrand Deoskar told media here.
“In addition to 99 people, 54 policemen were injured. Of them, three are in serious condition. A total of 30 cases were registered in Gwalior and 65 people were detained. Likewise, 12 cases each were registered in Bhind and Morena,” he said.
Mr Deoskar said that one person – who is seen in video while opening fire – has been identified as Raja Chouhan. A case has been registered against him for culpable homicide in Gwalior. Raja has not been arrested thus far.
Replying to a query, he admitted that police had issued an alert March 31. Necessary communication was established with people concerned.
He said that five people including two policemen were booked in Bhind for attempt to murder. Further sections would be added after the arrival of post-mortem report.
In Bhind, head constable Ramkumar Dohre and constable Sultan Rathore were booked last night in connection with Mahaveer Singh Rajawat’s death in firing.
In response to a query over a message being circulated on social media concerning a nationwide bandh on April 10, Mr Deoskar said that IGs and Superintendents of Police have been directed to exercise caution in view of the message as well as programmes scheduled for April 14.
Meanwhile, police are monitoring the situation in all 51 district headquarters.
