MARION — A radio antenna might have been the culprit behind an officer’s gun unintentionally discharging while serving a warrant last month, Marion police said Wednesday.
According to a Marion police news release, at 8:55 p.m. March 3, officers served a search warrant in the 100 block of Southview Drive. During that procedure, the gun of an office clearing a closet unintentionally discharged. No one was injured, police said.
The Marion Police Department investigated the incident and “formal internal action was taken to prevent a similar incident from happening in the future,” the news release said.
“The investigation showed that the possibility of a radio antenna entering the trigger area of the handgun may have been a factor in the discharge,” the news release states.
The police department said they will “assess any training options available” in order to prevent future unintentional firearm discharges.
