BlackBerry has accused Snapchat of infringing patents for its messaging technology as the once-dominant smartphone maker seeks to boost its revenue by enforcing its intellectual property claims.
The Canadian technology company, which is known for its Blackberry smartphones and early, secure messaging service BlackBerry Messenger (or BBM), said in its complaint to a California court that the photo app's parent company Snap had used its messenger and map-based technology.
"Seizing on the success of BBM... [Snap] developed and released its infringing Snapchat application and products, which incorporate and unlawfully utilize BlackBerry's patented technology," the court filing states.
