India’s premier institute for science education, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, was ranked as the top institution in India in a ranking released by the Human Resource Development Ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on Tuesday. Delhi University’s Miranda House was picked up as the best college in India followed by St Stephen’s College (DU), Bishop Heber College (TN), Hindu College (DU) and Presidency College (TN).
IISc, JNU and BHU also retained their top positions in the universities category. Anna University was ranked fourth while University of Hyderabad was fifth. IISc was followed by the Indian Institutes of Technology — Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur — at 2 to 5 ranks, while IITs of Kanpur and Roorkee were 7th and 8th. JNU was ranked 6th in overall ranking and BHU 9th followed by Anna University in Tamil Nadu.
Announcing the rankings at an event at the Vigyan Bhavan on Tuesday, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said IIT, Madras has been adjudged the best engineering college and the IIM-Ahmedabad the best management institution.
India’s premier healthcare institute, AIIMS, was ranked the best medical college followed by Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (Chandigarh), Christian Medical College (Vellore), Kasturba Medical College (Manipal), King George’s Medical University (Lucknow). In the pharmacy education, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (Mohali), Jamia Hamdard (Delhi), Panjab University, Institute of Chemical Technology (Maharashtra), Birla Institute of Technology & Science (Pilani) were in top five.
NLSIU-Bengaluru was adjudged the best law school in the country followed by National Law University (Delhi), Nalsar University of Law (Hyderabad), IIT Kharagpur and National Law University, Jodhpur.
In architecture, IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee were on the top followed by School of Planning and Architecture (New Delhi), College of Engineering (Trivandrum) and School of Planning and Architecture (Bhopal).
The NIRF also had special mention for ICAR - National Dairy Research Institute (Karnal), Indian Agricultural Research Institute (Delhi), Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (Bengaluru) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Mumbai) for imparting high quality education is special areas.
