Isner upsets Zverev to win Miami Open
miami: John Isner finally put an end to his ATP Masters final agony on Sunday, winning the Miami Open for the first time by beating Germany's Alexander Zverev 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-4. The 14th seed had lost his previous three major tour final appearances in 2012, 2013 and 2016 but came back from a set down to beat Zverev in two hours and 29 minutes. The victory capped a superb tournament for Isner, who endured a difficult start to 2018 which included an early-round exit at Indian Wells in his lead-in to Miami. The first US player since Andy Roddick in 2010 to lift the Miami title Isner will also reclaim a career high world ranking of ninth after the 13th title of his career.
Sindhu, Srikanth bag top honours
new delhi: Shuttlers ruled the roost as PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth were on Monday named 'Sportspersons of the Year' with their coach Pullela Gopichand being adjudged 'best coach' at the inaugural ESPN Multi-Sport Awards. Srikanth claimed the title of 'Sportsperson of the Year - Male' for his incredible run, bagging four Super Series titles. He became the only Indian and the fourth player ever to achieve it in one calendar year. Rio Olympics silver medalist Sindhu clinched the 'Sportsperson of the Year - Female' title for her fantastic performance round the year, winning the Indian and Korean Open Super Series titles. While Indian National Women's Hockey Team bagged the 'Team of the Year' title for their first Asia Cup triumph in 13 years.
Eastern sporting union, Sethu FC win in Iwl
shillong: Eastern Sporting Union kept their 100 percent record intact with a 2-0 victory over Gokulam Kerala FC in the Hero Indian Women's League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Monday. While in the other game of the day Sethu FC defeated Rising Student Club 2-0 to register their second win. Mandakini opened the scoring for Eastern Sporting Union in the first half with her strike in the 24th minute before Kamala Devi doubled the lead after the break in the 50th minute. The win took Eastern Sporting to 12 points from 4 matches. In the other match, Bangladeshi striker Sabina Khatun struck in the 47th minute before Manisha doubled the lead for Sethu FC with her strike in the 90th minute.
Nadal reclaims top spot in rankings
madrid: Spain's Rafael Nadal returned to the top spot in the men's Association of Tennis Professionals world singles rankings, released on Monday, dethroning Switzerland's Roger Federer. 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer fell to World No 2 after he lost to Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) at Miami Open's round of 64 last month. Meanwhile, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, Austria's Dominic Thiem and South Africa's Kevin Anderson kept their spots in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Rathore promises help for ailing footballer
guwahati: Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has promised to provide financial help to Assam footballer Sumit Rabha for treating his kidney ailments, the director of a city football club said on Monday. Both the kidneys of 26-year-old Rabha have been damaged and the matter was brought to the notice of the minister by Guwahati City FC, the club's director Kaustav Chakraborty said in a statement. Rabha has represented Assam and plays for several Guwahati-based clubs. "He needs a kidney transplantation which is very expensive and it is not possible for Rabha's family to bear the costs. We had appealed to the union sports minister on Twitter and thankfully he responded positively," Chakraborty said.
