One belongs to Nepal, other from West Bengal: police

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly circulating Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) across the country including Delhi, the police said on Monday.

Fake notes worth ₹4.5lakh of ₹2,000 denomination have been recovered, the police added.

The accused, Dilip Shah (32) from Nepal and Anand Dass (48) from West Bengal were arrested on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P.S. Kushwah said. The police said that they received a tip-off stating that one Nepal national Dilip Shah would come to Anand Vihar around 10 p.m. to deliver a consignment of FICN to a contact.

A trap was laid and the accused was arrested, Mr. Kushwah said adding that 166 fake notes of ₹2,000 were recovered from his possession.

During interrogation, he allegedly told the police that he has been smuggling and circulating FICN for the past 15 years.

“Earlier, he used to visit Bangladesh to procure FICN from their counterparts but for the last five years, he has been receiving it from a person in Malda,” the DCP said.

Inter-State operation

The accused further stated that he had come to Delhi to deliver the consignment to Anand Dass, resident of Uttar Pradesh who was also his customer for the past two to three years, the police said.

Following this, Mr. Dass was the arrested and FICN worth ₹1,18,000 was recovered from his possession, Mr. Kushwah added.

“During interrogation, Mr. Dass disclosed that he has been in the business for the last 10 years and after procuring FICN from Mr. Shah, he would further circulate in UP, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Delhi among other places,” said the officer adding that Mr. Dass was arrested in 2014 on the same charge.
