CHENNAI : As is the common practice in South India, my name has initials in it. When I applied for passport, I have to write the full family name instead of just putting the initials. And in some places where I used my passport as ID proof, the family name is given full. Some organisations insist on 100% name match and now that Aadhaar has to be linked with all our accounts, I am vexed with the problem of checking every document and ID proof to make sure the names are consistent. Many organisations don’t give the option to explain that both the name forms are one and the same. Is there any legal policy in India where any guideline is prescribed regarding the convention to be followed in writing names?
-Parameswaran E K
You can call your name whichever way you want either in full or with or without parents family name etc. In India we don’t follow the three name description. When problem comes, that can be resolved by appropriate explanation.
Our family has a property in the city limit of Rajkot, Gujarat and it was registered in our mother’s maiden name. She expired in 2006 and did not leave any will. On that property, we have constructed a building and let it on rent by an agreement in 2003. But unfortunately due to ignorance, we did not include any clause for rent hikes. Using this, the tenants are refusing to increase the rent. The agreement holds good even after my mother’s death? What are the options for me?
-Abid T. Sariya.
You must apply for enhancement of rent before the appropriate of rent controller under the Gujarat Rent Control Act. Your agreement cannot be the final word on the subject. The court can fix fair rent on such application. You have legal right to sue the tenants as the proper house owner.
I am presently working as Regional Transport Officer in state service since 1998. I was earlier working as Scientific Officer in Department of Atomic Energy for 11 years and applied to the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. I was relieved as Technical resignation cum lien basis. Am I eligible to claim benefits under Pension Rules, 1972.

From your question it appears as if you had gone unilaterally to the state government service. In the absence of any tripartite arrangement among all the three (earlier employer, new employer and yourself) you may not get the relief claimed by you.
I was working with Eastern Railways and resigned after a year. But now I again like to join due to my personal situation. Can I get back my job?
- AP Tiwari
In the absence of rules, a resignation is always unilateral and voluntary. Once resigned voluntarily and accepted by the authorities, it cannot be revoked and there is no possibility of getting back to your old job.
