Trekking club founder seeks advance bail

Peter Van Geit, a Belgian national and founder of Chennai Trekking Club, has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail.

Peter Van Geit has been implicated as the first accused in the FIR registered by Kurangani police in Theni, following the death of over 20 trekkers who were caught in the Kurangani forest fire. He has been implicated under Section174 of the CrPC, Sections 336 (endangering life of others), 337 (causing hurt by endangering act), 338 (causing grievous hurt) and 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and Section 21 D of the Tamil Nadu Forest Act, 1882.

Chennai Trekking Club, which was established in 2008, had organised the ill-fated expedition to Kurangani.
