Talk show appearances are usually unilluminating segments that follow a banter-plug-anecdote format. They're meant to seem spontaneous, but they're not. Everything is planned in advance. So when something unexpected happens, it feels like it's breaking through the b.s. and we're watching something real. Not even the professional famous people involved know what's going to happen. That's why this appearance by Splitting Up Together star Jenna Fischer on Jimmy Kimmel Live has our attention.
In the clip, Fischer comes out from backstage carrying a dress and wearing jeans and a towel wrapped around her torso. Jimmy Kimmel, confused, asks "What's going on? What happened?"
"So this was my outfit for tonight," she says, gesturing to the dress. "And I waited a little too long to get dressed, and then my zipper broke. And, um, I panicked." She sounds short of breath. This is not a joke. Things went wrong.
"You did the right thing!" Kimmel says encouragingly.
"You know, I am a Missouri girl, and the show must go on," Fischer said.
How Splitting Up Together Nails the Romantic Sitcom
"I've never been more comfortable," she said, before explaining her mixed feelings. "I am mentally a little freaking out that I'm on a talk show in a towel, but I'm physically very comfortable."
Then it turned into a normal talk show appearance, with Fischer promoting her show (it's on ABC Tuesday nights at 9:30/8:30c and it's pretty good) and doing an impression of her co-star Oliver Hudson's mother Goldie Hawn in Overboard.
Jenna Fischer is a real person. Shoutout to her.
(Although there is a conspiracy-minded part of me that thinks maybe this is indeed a bit, since it's the kind of thing that would happen to her Splitting Up Together character Lena. But I don't want it to be, and I 90% think it's genuine.)
