Governor Banwarilal Purohit meets PM Modi amidst Cauvery protests in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Just as Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and the entire council of ministers are observing a day’s fasting condemning the Central government for its failure to form the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) within the six-week deadline fixed by the Supreme Court, Governor Banwarilal Purohit today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he is likely to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh later in the day.  

The meetings assume significance as it happens in the backdrop of increasing protests by political parties, farmers associations and other outfits demanding the formation of Cauvery Management Board and condemning the Central government for its failure to form within the deadline set by the Supreme Court.

The governor is expected to brief the prime minister and home minister about the prevailing law and order situation in Tamil Nadu. While the principal opposition party DMK has called for a bandh on April 5, one of the strong traders body - Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai has asked its members to shut down on April 11. Apart from these, farmers’ outfits also staging road rokos, rail rokos etc., across the State.  

Governor’s visit to Delhi follows his meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi and other officials two days ago.
