PATNA: Nitish Kumar-led JD (U) will contest 25 to 30 seats in the 224-member Karnataka assembly for May 12 elections with an aim to increase its presence beyond Bihar.
At present, the party has just one MLA in Nagaland outside Bihar. Its lone MLA in Gujarat Chhotubhai Vasava had switched to
Sharad Yadav faction and floated a new political outfit— Bhartiya Tribal Party — before the 2017 Gujarat assembly polls.
“We are contemplating to contest in between 25 to 30 seats in
Karnataka elections,” a senior functionary of the party told TOI on Tuesday.
JD(U)’s national general secretary and its in charge for Delhi and Karnataka states
Sanjay Jha however said the party has decided to contest the Karnataka assembly election on its own. Final decision about the number of seats would be taken after thorough consultation with the party’s state leadership.
Jha also said that JD(U) national president and Bihar CM
Nitish Kumar would be visiting Karnataka on April 11 to formally launch its election campaign.
