Japan has placed tourism at the centre of its growth strategy. Inbound tourism has become one of the most important engines of economic growth in Japan in the recent years. Japan achieved its target of 20 million inbound tourists by 2020 five year early.
Japan aims to target 40 million visitors in the current context. In the last three years (2015-2017), the country has recorded robust year-on-year growth of 20 per cent with inbound arrivals growing from 19.7 million to over 24 million and reached almost 28.7 million at the end 2017. Japan relaxed its Visa rules for China and other Asian neighbours, and this has emerged as the biggest reason for the revival of its tourism fortune.
In 2016, Indonesia also implemented one of the most path breaking Visa policies in the world, announcing free Visa for citizens from 169 countries, including India, which was hailed by the UNWTO as “setting example to the world.” Many other countries throughout the world are thinking of incorporating easier and hassle-free visa policies which would attract maximum number of tourists.
