Over 4,000 motorists have been penalised in the last three months for traffic offences such as red light jumping, drunk driving, using mobile while driving and overspeeding thus facing a suspension of their driving licence for a period of three months.

Since January this year, the traffic police have penalised 1,129 motorists for driving/riding under the influence of alcohol, 563 motorists for speaking on mobile while riding/driving and 129 motorists for red light jumping.

From March 13 onwards, the traffic police have penalised 2,353 motorists for overspeeding. The police have begun penalising motorists for overspeeding after a gap of more than a year with the procurement of new laser speed radar guns.

A senior police officer said that 4,174 motorists are facing suspension of driving licence for a

period of not less than three months. The police officer said that motorists found involved in traffic offences such as red light jumping, drunk driving, using mobile while driving and overspeeding are prosecuted under appropriate provisions of law. Besides, their driving licence is impounded and forwarded to the concerned registering authority (RTO) for suspension of the licence based on the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.
