Ramanathapuram district police arrested one more member of a suspected radical group on Monday.

After busting the group on Sunday by arresting three members when they visited Kilakarai for a secret meeting, a special team, acting under the instructions of Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena, arrested M. Rizwan Mohamed (24) at Muthupet in Tiruvarur district.

Based on confessions made by the three accused, the team arrested Mohamed, working in a jewellery shop, on Monday evening. He was brought here late on Monday night and being questioned, the SP said. He did not visit Kilakarai but had attended the group’s maiden meeting at Muthupet a few months ago, the SP added.

The police had launched a dragnet to secure at least six to eight more people, including the group leader, who acted as a bridge between the members and Kaja Mohideen, leader of a radical group, who was in Puzhal prison after he was arrested in connection with the murder of Hindu Munnani activist Suresh Kumar at Ambattur in Chennai in 2014, the police said.

The group members wanted to secure his release after launching an attack on the prison, the police added.

Interrogation of the accused revealed that all members wanted to arm themselves and had contacted a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee at Mandapam camp to procure country-made pistols from Sri Lanka.
