CMFRI to host national conference on April 11, 12

As part of the national conference on marine debris, the Marine Biological Association of India (MBAI) will give away awards for the best photographs and short videos featuring marine and estuarine debris.

The photography and videography competition is aimed at creating public awareness on the dangers of improper disposal of plastics and other wastes.

The entries will be exhibited during the conference which will be attended by eminent scientists, activists and policy makers in the field of marine science, waste management, and coastal zone management from across the country. Awards will also be given for the best initiatives of local self-government bodies and other organisations in a slew of areas such as waste management, removal and processing of accumulated marine debris, infrastructure developed for coastal zone management, models developed for plastic waste recycling and processing, new packaging for reducing the use of plastics and strategies developed for implementations.

The conference, being hosted by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, is aimed at drawing an action plan to control marine debris, which is one of the biggest threats to the aquatic ecosystem.

The conference, to be held on April 11 and 12, will be open to the public.
