The Washington Redskins have re-signed defensive lineman Phil Taylor Sr. to a one-year deal.
Taylor, who turns 30 on Saturday, had been penciled in as the Redskins’ starting nose tackle heading into the 2017 season, following an impressive showing during training camp. But he tore his left quadriceps during a preseason game against Cincinnati and was placed on injured reserve following surgery.

“I feel terrible for Phil because he did a great job at getting himself ready to play,” Redskins Coach Jay Gruden said in confirming the injury and subsequent surgery last season. “He’s in excellent shape, but it’s just an unfortunate injury. The rest of the guys have got to step up.”
A first-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft, Taylor last played a regular season game in November 2014 before suffering knee injuries. He contemplated retirement in December 2016 but recommitted himself once he learned of the Redskins’ interest.
Terms of the one-year deal were not available.
