Federal Government’s support for scrabble sport will perk up Nigerian tourism

Nigerian tourismOn Monday, Wellington Jighere, the 2015 world scrabble champion, in Abuja mentioned that Federal Government’s support for the game of scrabble was key as it would perk up the tourism in Nigeria.

 
Jighere mentioned that scrabble as a sport has the possibility to propel Nigerian tourism. He further added that Nigeria as a country stands to grow immensely from the scrabble sport, working like a tool to drive its tourism.

 
“Scrabble can also be used to engage our teeming population productively, amongst other things,” Jighere said. He mourned the fact that sports tourism was a great chance Nigeria did not leverage upon regardless of playing host to several tournaments over the years.

 

The previous world scrabble number one explained that with ample support and sponsorship, sports tourism would have churned out lots of earnings for the country. He nevertheless mentioned that one important challenge in sports in Nigeria was financial support, adding that sports like scrabble is short of sponsorship despite of many achievements they have recorded.

 
“With a little support from government and corporate bodies, we can easily transform this noble sport to an endeavour that our dear nation can be identified with. “We are already famed for being the number one scrabble-playing nation in the world. “Our government can capitalise on this to transform our dear nation to become the scrabble capital of the world, and also become a beacon for educational advancement on this continent,’’ Jighere said.
