Intelligence alerts railways ahead of stir

The State intelligence has sent out an alert to law-enforcing agencies across Tamil Nadu on the possibility of attacks on vital installations, particularly the railways, Central Government offices, establishments of the Karnataka government and high tension electricity towers among others.

With widespread agitations planned by various political parties to condemn the Union government for not forming the Cauvery Management Board, the message said protesters could target the railways and urged all Commissioners/Superintendents of Police in the State to gear up their intelligence machinery and prevent any untoward incident. The Public Secretary also wrote to District Collectors and Police Commissioners on Monday that members of the Puthiya Thamizhagam ad proposed to organise train picketing in all districts against the Centre for not taking steps to establish the CMB.

The Government Railway Police also sent out an alert stating that members of various political parties planned to obstruct trains across the State between April 2 and April 6 to condemn the Centre on the Cauvery issue.

He sought deployment of sufficient strength from the Railway Protection Force to coordinate with the GRP and local police to avert untoward incidents.

Meanwhile, senior police officers at the police headquarters here reviewed the security arrangements ahead of the protest called by the traders association on Tuesday.
