Toddlers drown while playing in tub

Case of death by negligence lodged as children were left unsupervised

Two toddlers drowned while allegedly playing near their house in south Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri on Saturday. The police have registered a case and begun a probe.

The police said that the victims have been identified as two-year-old Prateek and his three-year-old sister Srishti, residents of a rented accommodation in Asola Village.

“The police received information about the deaths from AIIMS Trauma Centre. Preliminary enquiry has revealed that both of them drowned in a hauz (a tub used to feed water to cattle). The tub was on a plot about 100 metres away from their house where the kids used to play,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Romil Baaniya.

A senior police officer said that the minors had gone to their aunt’s house in the afternoon and she dropped them outside their house after feeding them lunch.

“Preliminary probe reveals that the children went to the plot instead of going home. A while later, they were found inside the tub by the neighbours,” he said, adding that the tub was about three-feet deep.

The children were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where they were declared brought dead. The post-mortem was conducted and the bodies were handed over to the family for last rites, said the police.

Mr. Baaniya said that a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) has been registered and further investigation is underway.
