Body thought to be of woman found at bottom of cliff at North Head

Police are trying to piece together how a body, believed to be that of a woman, ended up at the bottom of a cliff near a popular walking track at the northern edge of Sydney Harbour.

A local fisherman made the grisly discovery on Thursday morning, on the southern side of the Fairfax Walk at North Head, Manly, famous for its spectacular views of the harbour.

A retrieval operation was launched with officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command, PolAir and Police Rescue officers.

The body remains unidentified but "can possibly be described as a woman", police said on Monday.

They believe it had been at the bottom of the cliff for some time.

State Crime Command Homicide Squad detectives are now assisting Northern Beaches police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause.

At this stage, there is no indication as to whether or not the death is suspicious.
